My background

Welcome to my practice. My name is Jessie Bannister and I’m a licensed therapist in Marin. I’m a California native and have lived in the Bay Area for the past 10 years. Before becoming a therapist I focused on a career in the corporate world. As the years passed I came to realize that though there were rewarding parts of my job - I was always most drawn to the interpersonal and relational aspects in my work. This realization helped direct me towards my true calling as a therapist. And if you’re wondering … I’ve been a client too. Therapy has helped me live more fully and a process I believe deeply in. I share these details with you in service of removing the stigma associated with reaching out. We’re all a work in progress.

how i work

I believe our emotional health is strongly influenced by three primary areas:

a) our thoughts and feelings b) our behaviors and how we spend our time c) our interpersonal relationships

When we assess these areas we often better understand the sources of our struggles and how we might want to proceed towards change. We’ll begin to explore the areas that need nurturing, new ways to approach our thoughts and feelings, options for creating healthier relationships (including the relationship we have with ourselves) and new coping strategies.

I work from an integrated model in which I blend techniques from Humanistic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness and Psychodynamic Therapy.

what i’m like as a therapist

Since I  have walked different paths in my own life, I think you will find my  approach to be non-judgmental, down to earth and practical. I find that a combination of insight + action creates the best therapy outcomes. In addition to being your therapist I am part coach, ally and guide. When you work with me, you know you have someone in your corner.

I’m a board certified psychotherapist and a clinical member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. I’ve had the pleasure of providing therapy services in Marin, Sonoma and San Francisco counties since 2012. During this time I’ve served clients with diverse backgrounds, life experiences and issues that brought them to therapy. I’ve worked  in a range of settings including school districts, college campuses, community health organizations and medical facilities. I most recently worked on the Adult and Family Medicine team at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. I ultimately chose to transition to private practice because it allowed me to have greater flexibility in how I support my clients.
